Brigu o vatrogascima preuzima Ministarstvo unutarnjih poslova i osniva tzv. vatrogasnu miliciju.
When Rijeka was liberated in May 1945, only 16 firefighters remained from a unit that numbered more than 100 firefighters. The war ended, so part of the Italians opted out, and the Slovenians went home. Those 16 firefighters were the core of the Rijeka fire department in the coming period. By merging Rijeka and Sušak into one city, a professional fire department was founded in 1947 in the premises of the fire station. The core consists of DVD Sušak firefighters and professional firefighters left after the war. The Ministry of Internal Affairs takes over the care of firefighters and establishes the so-called fire militia. The equipment and resources of the firefighters at that time were very modest. The equipment and techniques left over from the war are also used. PVJ of Rijeka municipality has officially existed since the liberation of the country, with the fact that until January 7, 1953, it was part of the State Secretariat for Internal Affairs - as a fire brigade. From January 8, 1953 to May 31, 1967, it was part of the NOK and NOO Rijeka - Department of Civil Protection. In 1972, one of the most important decisions was made to reorganize work within the Unit; from 3 shifts to work in 4 shifts. Numerous social changes, systems and arrangements that have plagued this city over the past century and a half have always taken care of the protection of people and property. In the historical period of the separation of Rijeka and Sušak, the firefighters were the ones who connected the unnaturally separated cities, guarded property on both sides of the Rijeka and sacrificed themselves without asking about borders and politics. Later, in recent history, the unit was the main bearer of the establishment or renewal of the network of voluntary fire brigades in the area of the entire Primorje-Gorski Kotar County, as well as outside it.
