Already back in 1982, a group of local residents first attempted to establish an association. We have no written records of that event, only stories passed down by older residents, recalling that a president could not be elected and thus the initiative fell apart. On the initiative of a group of residents, on February 3rd, 2002, in the settlement of Blato, the Volunteer Fire Department BLATO – ZAGREB was officially founded. The need to establish the Department arose primarily from significant dangers threatening the community (to mention just a few: natural disasters, the Zagreb bypass, illegal dumpsites, uncultivated agricultural land, storage of various energy sources in households, industrial plants, the age of some farm buildings, etc.). The residents expressed the need for regular fire prevention measures and firefighting education, all for the purpose of protecting lives, preserving the environment, and ensuring the safety of residential and agricultural buildings. In this context, the Volunteer Fire Department Blato – Zagreb today represents an important pillar of fire protection in the settlement itself, and, when required and called upon, also by the Zagreb Fire Brigade and beyond. We are extremely proud of our socially beneficial work and dedication. The founders of the Volunteer Fire Department Blato – Zagreb were: Ivan Bačura, Ivan Cikron, Nikola Gajan, Ivica Golubiček, Ivan Holjak, Josip Imprić, Ivan Sugj, Ivan Sušanj, Ivan Ščukanec, Ivica Ščukanec, Žarko Tuškan, Mijo Vodir and Branko Vrban. On the occasion of the foundation, the first Secretary of the Department, Mr. Ivan Sušanj, donated fifteen ceremonial uniforms to the founders and the leadership, as well as a ceremonial silk handwoven fire brigade flag, which we still proudly carry to this day.
