Back in 1888, when Međimurje belonged to present-day Hungary (Austro-Hungary) and their laws applied, Hungary passed a law that every village must have an organized fire service in order to prevent and extinguish fires in case of fire. Even then, there were professional and volunteer firefighters, but in our villages, due to insufficient funding, there were only volunteer firefighters. Each village had to have a specific syringe, they had their own markings and other equipment needed to put out the fire, depending on the infrastructure located in the village, and the then municipalities had to provide funding for firefighting equipment. There were about 30 firefighters on that list of volunteer firefighters who had to be available and ready for interventions at all times. During the Austro-Hungarian Empire, only 15 fire brigades were established in Međimurje, of which only three in the first decades of the 20th century. Maybe it’s a lot, and maybe a little. For Međimurje a lot if we compare other parts of the then Kingdom of Croatia, Slavonia and Dalmatia in which a total of 177 fire brigades were founded, or little given the atmosphere in which the companies operated and in which developed urban, social, economic and other life in Međimurje space. Let us add that the previously established fire brigade in Međimurje did not have its own association, coordination at the level of Međimurje. Probably members of the Međimurje fire brigades are present at a professional firefighting course organized by the Hungarian Fire Brigade in 1901 in ten Hungarian cities. Based on indirect sources, it is concluded that on May 4, 1888 in Goričan, at the initiative of the locals, a meeting was held to discuss the establishment of a fire brigade. It was officially founded on December 31, 1888, ie only in the "old summer", and this information is recorded in the Minutes of the session of the Voluntary Fire Brigade Goričan. The then president of Gorčenko, Rev. Fr. Ivan Kenđelić. The founding members were all listed as members in 1892 and were listed in Hungarian, which was then the official language in Croatia.
