DVD HRŽENICA
Hrženica je bila prvo selo u koje je izvan nekadašnjih trgovišta i gradića već 1872. godine prodrla vatrogasna ideja. Ovo se, dakako, može razumjeti: uzori su bili vrlo blizu, jer je nedaleki Varaždin osnovao „Prvi hrvatski dobrovoljni vatrogasni zbor“ 1864. godine, a Ludbreg kao regionalno središte imao je četvrto dobrovoljno vatrogasno društvo u Hrvatskoj (osnovano 1869. godine). Svi su oni imali povod u čestim požarima nezaštićenih domaćinstava. U Ludbregu je opomena bila najsvježija: godine 1864. izgorio je sav sjeveroistočni dio mjesta, a požarom su bili zahvaćeni i objekti starog grada pa je tom prilikom izgorjelo 67 različitih zgrada. Osnivanje ludbreškog vatrogasnog društva izazvalo je veliki interes i u gradskoj okolici jer su se u društvo učlanjivali i najaktivniji pojedinci iz tih sela. Kao što je navedeno i u uvodu poglavlja o DVD-u Sveti Đurđ, začetnik vatrogasnog pokreta u ovome kraju bio je Konrad Klingspoegl, sin poznatog šumara i arhitekta Leopolda Klingspoegla, jednog od osnivača DVD-a Ludbreg. On nakon stjecanja učiteljskog zvanja postaje „pravim učiteljem“ na nižoj pučkoj školi u Hrženici krajem 1874. godine, što govori kako najvjerojatnije on sâm nije prvi inicijator osnutka Društva, već su to morali biti drugi mještani.
U različitim referatima o povijesti Društva kao „oduševljeni osnivači“ spominju se Josip Kosir, Rok Kovač, Matija Čanaki i drugi, „koji zajedno osnivaju „zbor“ (DVD) u Hrženici 1872. godine. U prvom su pozivu objavili: pristupiti toj novoj humanoj organizaciji mogu svi: zdravi, okretni, požrtvovni i bistri ljudi koji su voljni da se podvrgnu disciplini zbora i da djeluju na opću dobrobit, kad se ukaže potreba. Prilično primitivnim sredstvima (kante, škafovi, krampovi, čaklje i sl.) služili su se hrženički vatrogasci punih 20 godina, odnosno sve do nabave prve ručne štrcaljke.“ Činjenica je da se na niz mjesta u literaturi spominje kako je ovo Društvo zapravo osnovano 1885. godine, no valja poštivati danas službeno priznatu godinu koja ovo Društvo postavlja najstarijim dobrovoljnim vatrogasnim društvom osnovanim na selu u srednjoj Europi.
Hrženica was the first village outside of former market towns and cities where the firefighting idea took root as early as 1872. This development is understandable given the proximity of influential role models: nearby Varaždin had established the "First Croatian Volunteer Fire Corps" in 1864, and Ludbreg, as the regional center, founded the fourth volunteer fire department in Croatia in 1869. All these organizations were prompted by frequent fires in unprotected households. In Ludbreg, the warning was particularly fresh: in 1864, the entire northeastern part of the town burned down, including buildings of the Old Town, resulting in the destruction of 67 different structures. The founding of the Ludbreg Fire Department sparked great interest in the surrounding areas, as the most active individuals from those villages also joined the society. As mentioned in the introduction regarding DVD Sveti Đurđ, the pioneer of the firefighting movement in this region was Konrad Klingspoegl, son of the renowned forester and architect Leopold Klingspoegl, one of the founders of DVD Ludbreg. Konrad became a "certified teacher" at the lower public school in Hrženica in late 1874. This timeline suggests that he likely wasn't the initial founder of the Society, but rather other local residents must have taken the lead. In various historical reports, Josip Kosir, Rok Kovač, Matija Čanaki, and others are mentioned as the "enthusiastic founders" who together established the "corps" (DVD) in Hrženica in 1872. In their first call to action, they stated: "all healthy, agile, self-sacrificing, and bright men willing to submit to the discipline of the corps and act for the general welfare when the need arises" were welcome to join this new humanitarian organization. For a full 20 years, until the acquisition of their first manual sprayer, the firefighters of Hrženica relied on primitive tools such as buckets, tubs, pickaxes, and hooks. While several literary sources cite 1885 as the actual founding year, it is important to respect the currently officially recognized year of 1872. This distinction makes DVD Hrženica the oldest volunteer fire department founded in a rural village in Central Europe.
